Steven R. Pietro looks at employment opportunities available to military veterans

Steven R. Pietro

Military supplies firm owner Steven R. Pietro explores opportunities open to former service members.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, January 31, 2019 / — According to Steven R. Pietro, co-founder of Native American service-disabled veteran owned military food supplies business Justice Government Supply, Inc., securing work following military service can be tough. It should today, however, he says, now be up to both large and small companies and local businesses, as well as individuals in the community, to do their part in assisting the country's invaluable veterans in securing employment in a civilian capacity.

The Veterans' Employment and Training Service suggests that the current rate of veteran unemployment in the United States stands at approximately 4 percent, a slight increase over recent years. While this largely mirrors current non-veteran unemployment rates according to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment among veterans is often exacerbated by lingering stresses, strains, and physical injuries resulting from their time served selflessly in the military.

"While the government places significant importance on assisting veterans with reintegration and finding work, it's critical that local businesses and individuals are similarly committed to creating grassroots career paths and employment opportunities," Pietro explains.

Government assistance programs, such as the Veterans Employment Center, exist to connect veterans with both public and private employers offering much-needed job opportunities, he points out, while also assisting in the creation of resumes and portfolios, and further helping former military personnel to progress in their civilian lives and careers.

"In the first instance, however, addressing the requirement for valuable skills training is vital," suggests Pietro, "before then looking to create resulting employment opportunities for out-of-work veterans, post-training."

Supporting highly valuable, skilled work for veterans is, he says, something which affords struggling former military personnel not only a new sense of purpose but also a healthy source of income, both of which are essential to the continued well-being of the country's veterans.

"As a result, along with—and directly via—Justice Government Supply, Inc., I remain committed to seeking to drive employment opportunities and facilitate work and training for veterans through partnerships with other local businesses and organizations," Pietro explains.

"I hope to do this," he adds, wrapping up, "while also promoting an improved understanding of the numerous personal, social, and professional challenges faced by our nation's incredible veterans in the process."

A graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and San Diego's California Western School of Law, Steven R. Pietro currently resides in West Palm Beach, Florida. An experienced professional with a demonstrated history of working in both the public and private sectors, as well as within the military industry, Pietro is highly skilled in sales, team building, public speaking, management, and leadership, among other talents. Christopher Goldberg unveils defense base insurance for workers

Mandatory as outlined in the U.S. Defense Base Act, Christopher Goldberg highlights the importance of defense base insurance for employers and their employees.

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, January 31, 2019 / — The United States Defense Base Act, first enacted in 1941, is an extension of the federal workers' compensation program which covers longshoremen and harbor workers. Today, the Defense Base Act covers any person employed at a United States defense base overseas and is intended to provide medical treatment and compensation to employees of defense contractors injured in the course of employment, according to Christopher Goldberg, Executive Vice President of Gendelman Insurance Services.

Goldberg goes on to explain that, in the current version of the Defense Base Act, which is administered by the United States Department of Labor, there are five provisions which prompt obtaining the necessary insurance coverage.

First among these states that any company with an employee—including third-country nationals and non-U.S. citizens—working on a military base or reservation outside of the U.S. must seek the necessary cover. "This includes," says Goldberg, "those working for private employers on U.S. military bases, or on any land utilized by the U.S. for military purposes outside of the country and including U.S. territories."

The second provision states that cover is also necessary where any employee is engaged in U.S. government-funded public works business outside of the U.S. including construction and service contracts in connection with national defense. Similarly, and third among the provisions highlighted by Goldberg, the same applies where any employee is engaged in public works or military contracts with a foreign government which has been deemed necessary to the national security of the United States.

"Workers' insurance is also necessary where one or more employees are tasked with providing services funded by the U.S. government outside of the realm of regular military service," points out Goldberg of his fourth noted provision.

Lastly, Goldberg touches on employees of subcontractors. "Employees of any subcontractors involved in a contract similar to any of those highlighted above will also require the necessary defense base workers' insurance," he points out.

Defense Base Act insurance is available in the U.S. from Gendelman Insurance Services for contractors and subcontractors who work overseas. "Our dedicated Defense Base Act advisor team, headquartered in Washington, D.C., works with a multitude of Defense Base Act insurance carriers to protect your needs," the executive Vice President explains. "Furthermore," he adds, wrapping up, "in the unfortunate event of a claim, we will work directly with your team as required."

Fernando Guadalupe

Fernando Guadalupe

FORT JACKSON, SOUTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES, January 30, 2019 / — Decorated Officer Fernando Guadalupe spent over twenty years serving in the US Army in many roles––both abroad and at home. Besides instructing and preparing hundreds of future Army leaders, Mr. Guadalupe spent years studying to become a subject matter expert on a handful of emerging topics.

In his time with the Army, Fernando Guadalupe conducted numerous tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, both within groups and as a distinguished leader. From his over two decades of experience in the Army, he gained the education to train future leaders and build up the overall intelligence of his division.

His knowledge comes from years of studying cultures and technology, and Fernando Guadalupe has published many of his findings in military technical journals for peers and fellow leaders to enhance their understanding of wartime issues. While serving, he assumed the roles of Commander, Colonel, and Operations Officer. In addition, he’s served as a lecturer where he could share his own discoveries with new generations of Army recruits.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations Subject Matter Expert

One of Fernando Guadalupe’s passions is staying ahead of technological trends and advances and studying how they can be used for the Army. Because of this, he scouted new channels and researched emerging tactics and tech such as newer, improved helicopter systems.

Mr. Guadalupe also studied the complex field of unmanned aircraft and their benefits in wartime and lectured on his findings as well as on potential future policies. His work covered tactical warfare, FAA regulations, procedures for unmanned aircraft, and other emerging topics. Because of this, he earned the title Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations Subject Matter Expert and ended up fielding the very first training UAS unit in the US Army. He’s proud to be one of only a handful of commanding officers who possess an in-depth understanding of tactical unmanned aircraft systems.

Central and South America Geopolitical Subject Matter Expert

One of the most researched subjects in Fernando Guadalupe’s career is the culture and the geography of Central and South American areas. Through years of observance and thorough research, Mr. Guadalupe ensured that his work would go on to improve the entire Army’s understanding of these geopolitical subjects. When future recruits cross into these dozens of areas, it will be his research that minimizes threats and reinforces their comprehension.

Sleep Deprivation During Wartime

In addition to his other studies, Fernando Guadalupe wanted to improve the lives of his comrades during service. He began to research sleep deprivation and the effects it had on soldiers during wartime, hoping to uncover methods of healthier sleeping patterns to enhance performance. His work will lead to greater research and development and to the improved mental and physical function of all Army recruits.

Mr. Guadalupe has prepared many future soldiers during his impressive career with the US Army. His studies and his published works complement the fact that his is an integral leader who goes above and beyond what’s expected of his service.

What makes veteran entrepreneurs successful?

NAVSO and Purdue University Share Their Research Results

ARLINGTON, VA, UNITED STATES, January 30, 2019 / — The National Association of Veteran-Serving Organizations (NAVSO) will present the findings of their research study conducted in partnership with researchers from Purdue University’s Center for Urban Global Sustainability (CGUS), Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) and Center for Regional Development, titled, “Success Factors for Veteran Entrepreneurs” during a lunchtime event hosted at the Booz Allen Hamilton Innovation Center in Washington, D.C. Purdue has a proven track record of conducting both research and engagement with military and veteran families, studying and promoting entrepreneurship, and mobilizing data to study patterns. Findings indicate strong correlations to business growth relating to certain input and process factors yet, many service providers, investors and veteran entrepreneurs may be focusing on the wrong factors when trying to grow a veteran-led business.

This research was funded through the generosity of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and supported by Newman’s Own Foundation. The end of the report provides recommendations through the lens of what matters for veterans, service providers, policy makers and investors. The full report is available for download here:

“There is so much focus on leadership in the veteran community both in and out of the business world. Our research has found that culture has a bigger impact on successful business growth over leadership contrary to what many veterans believe. There are so many other great insights in this study and after a year of research and analysis, we are excited to share the results.” says Kelly Finn Störmer, Interim CEO at NAVSO.

The goals of this research were: To generate actionable insights using empirical data; To increase awareness and understanding about needs and determinants related to the success of veteran-owned businesses; To promote collaboration among organizations that promote and support veteran entrepreneurship; and To identify action steps toward accelerated success.

The research began in February 2018 to answer the question: What Makes Veteran Entrepreneurs Successful? Over the course of nine months, two focus groups were held and the final survey was launched. The qualifications were simple: veterans who started their business in 2001 to present, employed more than one person, and were within the United States were invited to participate in an online survey in order to understand what were the drivers of growth in successful businesses. Outreach to research participants was conducted by grassroots efforts from the Steering Committee through their email listservs, social media channels, and extended networks. The Steering Committee consists of the following organizations: Breakline, Bunker Labs, Columbia University, Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), Kilpatrick Townsend, Patriot Boot Camp, Street Shares, Task Force X Capital Management, The Mission, VAMBOA, VETCON and Veteran Crowd.

Konstantin Balakiryan: Fuel cells "Delta-FC5". New generation

PHOENIX, ARIZONA, USA, January 29, 2019 / — There is no doubt that fuel cells will be the prime factor with our evolving into utilizing water as the main fuel for energy production of the future. It is well known that fuel cells use the chemical energy of hydrogen, work with higher efficiency than internal combustion engines, and can convert chemical energy into electrical energy with efficiency up to 60% and higher.

Currently, cost, performance, and durability remain key issues in the fuel cell industry, there are problems associated with overcoming critical technical barriers to efficient fuel cell development: 1. Cost – platinum group metals are used in fuel cell catalysts. 2. Performance – ion-exchange membranes are not effective enough for viable long term stationary and portable power source systems. 3. Durability – short life of the fuel cell system components.

It is these shortcomings with fuel cell design that impede their wider introduction into the country's energy sector, that the US Department of Energy has focused attention, and has requested leading US universities and laboratories to address these issues. We have been working with fuel cells since 2009 and, in our opinion, quite successfully solved a number of technical and technological problems associated with fuel cells.

It is known that in existing fuel cells, the oxygen used in the process is atmospheric air. At the moment, when thermal elements are not yet very common, this is acceptable. However, with massive industrial use of thermal elements, this can lead to an ecological disaster. Even today, the eco-system of the planet is experiencing difficulties due to the enormous consumption of atmospheric oxygen. It is no secret that, without exception, all energy generation devices using a combustion or explosion process (Carnot Cycle, Diesel, Thermal Power Plant, etc.) burn atmospheric oxygen.

The new generation design for fuel cells of the “Delta-FC5” series uses oxygen contained in water. We will first borrow water from the world's oceans, utilize its energy potential, and then the output water from the fuel cell will be returned to the source. It should be noted that the same volume of water, taking into account minor compensation of losses, can be used in these new generation fuel cells many times.

Thus, with a full transition to water-based fuel as the main source of energy on Earth, we eliminate the threat of environmental catastrophe associated with both the loss of atmospheric oxygen and the over expenditure of ocean water. The advantage of using oxygen extracted from water in fuel cells is clearly revealed when comparing the content per unit volume of oxygen in the atmosphere to that of water in the world's oceans. The proportion of oxygen (by mass) in water is 88.81%, while the proportion of oxygen in the air is only 20.93%.

Structurally, the “Delta-FC5” fuel cell is a kind of dual multi-electrode electron lamp divided by an impenetrable Teflon partition. Where a gas mixture containing 97% of hydrogen is supplied to the left compartment of the device, and a gas mixture containing 88% oxygen is fed to the right compartment.

For a more accurate description of the process of converting the chemical energy of hydrogen to electrical energy, we note that in a “Delta-FC5” fuel cell anions and cations are fed to the anode and cathode, not to hydrogen and oxygen. The ionization energy of the atoms of hydrogen and oxygen is about the same, in the range of 13.6 -14 Ev. Inside each compartment of the fuel cell “Delta-FC5”, special electrodes are mounted, to which electrical pulses are fed with a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes. This is due to the fact that the formation process of anions and cations at different stages is associated with overcoming the potential energy barriers for interaction, which exists inside atoms and their nuclei (A. Strong, B. Electromagnetic, .C.Weak, D.Gravitational).

Collective excitation of atoms using high-frequency electric pulses allows breaking bonds in the hydrogen atom, from which hydrogen loses an electron and becomes a charged hydrogen ion, and oxygen atoms capture electrons becoming negatively charged oxygen ions. Thus, in the fuel cell “Delta-FC5” eliminates the need for catalysts made from expensive and limited platinum group metals (PGM) Instead of short-lived, contaminated ion-conducting membranes such as the proton exchange membrane with a polymer electrolyte used in existing fuel cells, the “Delta-FC5” utilizes reliable and almost “eternal” control grids, separating the flows of positively and negatively charged ions.

With the new concept “Delta-FC5” fuel cells there are no design limitations on the power output or intended use. They can work perfectly both in stationary and portable conditions, providing heat and electricity for the city, industrial enterprises, and transport (road, rail, water, and air).

Therefore, the new “Delta-FC5” fuel cell concept opens up vast possibilities to the ubiquitous use of hydrogen as a versatile fuel supporting all types of energy necessary for our human needs moving forward.
