Denmark Moves to Strengthen Greenland Defense

(MENAFN) Denmark is rushing additional military forces to Greenland following escalating territorial claims from Washington, local outlets reported Monday.

Confirmation of the troop movement came from the Danish Armed Forces, according to a Danish broadcaster.

A significant contingent of Danish combat personnel is set to touch down in Kangerlussuaq Monday night, characterized as "a substantial contribution" to the island's defense posture.

The incoming forces will bolster what has become a rapidly expanding Danish military presence on the Arctic territory.

Approximately 100 Danish servicemembers had previously reached Nuuk—Greenland's capital city—while a comparable force was stationed in Kangerlussuaq, the report indicated.

Military officials stated the deployed units will participate in the "Arctic Endurance" training operation, which Danish leadership says has been expedited and expanded in direct response to recent declarations by US President Donald Trump.

Trump has publicly stated his desire for the "complete and total purchase" of the Danish-controlled territory, framing the acquisition as critical for US and international security interests.

The White House has not ruled out using military force to secure Greenland.

On Saturday, Trump announced plans to slap 10% tariffs on the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland starting Feb. 1, with rates escalating to 25% by June 1, citing their resistance to US territorial ambitions over Greenland.

In response to the tariff threat, the eight European nations released a unified statement Sunday condemning the US position while pledging continued cooperation on Arctic defense matters.
