US Army Intercepts Iranian drone
A Shahed-139 drone from Iran was observed heading toward the carrier “with unclear intent,” according to reports citing US military sources. The incident occurred while a US naval task force, led by the Abraham Lincoln, was stationed in the region and diplomatic efforts were underway to arrange talks between Washington and Tehran on nuclear issues.
“An F-35C fighter jet from Abraham Lincoln shot down the Iranian drone in self-defense and to protect the aircraft carrier and personnel on board,” Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, said. He added that no American personnel were harmed in the engagement.
The news triggered a rise in oil futures, which climbed more than $1 per barrel.
Reports indicate that negotiations between US and Iranian officials had been scheduled for Friday, but Tehran has reportedly requested changes to both the location and format of the talks. Sources suggest Iran seeks to focus solely on nuclear matters and exclude discussions on missiles and regional proxy groups, which are priorities for other countries.
Earlier reports noted that diplomatic efforts by Moscow and Ankara helped reduce the risk of a US military strike on Iran, opening the door to possible talks. Russia has consistently advocated resolving the nuclear dispute through diplomatic channels rather than force.
Despite ongoing tensions and warnings of potential military action, US President Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday that he hopes “we make a deal” with Iran. The United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in 2018, reinstating sanctions. This prompted Iran to gradually reduce compliance and increase uranium enrichment to 60% purity.
