NATO Chief Calls for Higher Defense Spending

(MENAFN) The NATO secretary general on Thursday called on European and Canadian partners to boost military expenditures and expand defense production capacity, emphasizing that while the United States remains dedicated to the alliance, its strategic attention has increasingly turned toward the Indo-Pacific region.

Addressing journalists ahead of the gathering, Mark Rutte explained that talks would center on carrying out resolutions adopted at the Hague summit. These include “ramping up” defense investment and reinforcing the alliance’s industrial capabilities to maintain effective deterrence.

He further underscored the importance of sustained backing for Ukraine, highlighting a recently unveiled £500 million (around $630 million) British air defense initiative. Rutte cautioned that Kyiv continues to face missile strikes despite demonstrating resilience on the battlefield.

According to Rutte, the latest rise in defense budgets among member states indicates that pressure from Washington is producing tangible outcomes, adding that European and Canadian allies are “stepping up” by allocating billions more toward military spending.
