Pentagon Warns Action Against Anthropic Over AI Model Military Limitation
According to reports published Monday, the Pentagon has raised the possibility of labeling Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” as part of efforts to push the company to ease limitations on the military application of its AI technology.
If such a designation were applied, contractors working with the Defense Department would be forced to either cut ties with Anthropic or discontinue their Pentagon contracts.
Reports indicate that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is nearing a decision to terminate the department’s association with the company due to the disagreement.
An unnamed Defense Department official was quoted as saying: "It will be an enormous pain in the * to disentangle, and we are going to make sure they pay a price for forcing our hand like this," underscoring the seriousness of the dispute.
Claude is described in reports as the only AI system currently cleared for use within the Pentagon’s classified networks and has reportedly been employed in sensitive military missions. Discussions between Anthropic and the Defense Department over the scope of the software’s permitted use have been ongoing for months.
While Anthropic is said to be open to adjusting certain restrictions for military clients, the company has reportedly maintained strict boundaries against using its technology for widespread domestic surveillance or for the creation of weapons systems capable of operating without human control. It remains unclear which side disclosed specifics from the private negotiations.
The Pentagon is also seeking confirmation that it can deploy software tools from Anthropic as well as other major technology companies — OpenAI, Google, and xAI — for what officials have described as “all lawful purposes.”
In a statement cited by reports, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said: "The Department of War’s relationship with Anthropic is being reviewed. Our nation requires that our partners be willing to help our warfighters win in any fight."
