Sweden Plans to Invest USD916M for Sophisticated Air Defense Systems

(MENAFN) Sweden announced plans to invest 8.7 billion Swedish crowns ($916 million) in air defense capabilities, Defense Minister Pal Jonson confirmed on Thursday.

Jonson stated that the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration has commissioned a new mobile counter-drone air defense system aimed at protecting military personnel and critical infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, railway hubs, and urban centers.

The procurement will involve multiple companies, including BAE Systems and Saab, under a coordinated agreement.

“It is more important than ever to invest in air defense capabilities. Protection against threats from the air is a high priority for the government and we will conclude more agreements to strengthen the Swedish defense,” Jonson said in a news release.

Deliveries of the new systems are anticipated to begin in 2027.
