Keeping up with the military industry news from the world
Provided by AGPThe proposed acquisition centers on AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles manufactured by RTX Corporation. These missiles are expected to be integrated into Belgium’s fleet of 45 F-35 fighter jets produced by Lockheed Martin, and may also be used within the country’s NASAMS air defense system.
According to official documents from the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, Belgium has formally submitted a request to Washington seeking approval for the procurement.
The AMRAAM system uses radar-guided technology designed to intercept and destroy airborne threats and has gained attention due to its use in modern conflict environments, including the war in Ukraine.
Belgian authorities are also exploring the possibility of localizing parts of the production process. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding potential manufacturing activity at the FN Browning facility in Zutendaal, with the aim of supplying missiles for European customers.
According to reports, other European countries are also positioning themselves in the defense supply chain. The Netherlands, in particular, is competing to host production activities and has already secured significant AMRAAM-related contracts in recent years.
The proposed deal reflects broader European efforts to expand air defense capabilities amid growing regional security concerns.
