US Defense Chief Halts Air Force Promotions—Report

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly halted the promotion of nine Air Force colonels and postponed advancement decisions affecting at least two dozen additional senior officers, according to reports.

The report alleged that the decisions were linked to factors including officers’ race or gender, their association with diversity, equity and inclusion programs implemented under the previous administration, or concerns about their perceived loyalty.

According to reports, the identities of the nine Air Force colonels whose promotions were blocked have not been publicly disclosed. The report also stated that promotion decisions involving senior Army and Navy personnel have similarly been delayed or prevented.

Since taking office, Hegseth has advocated removing what he described as “woke” military leadership, arguing that some high-ranking officers were elevated during former President Joe Biden’s administration to satisfy diversity objectives rather than on the basis of merit.

Reports indicate that more than 20 flag officers have been dismissed, reassigned or sidelined since Hegseth’s confirmation. Among them were Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. C.Q. Brown and Adm. Lisa Franchetti, who became the first woman to serve as the Navy’s chief of operations.

Responding to the allegations, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said military advancement decisions are determined solely by qualifications and performance, stating that the Pentagon “will never consider the color of a service member’s skin or their gender as a factor in promotions.”

The reported actions have drawn attention as the Pentagon continues implementing leadership changes under the current administration, according to reports.
