Trump Set for China Visit on May 14-15
"President Trump's long-awaited meeting with President Xi in China will now take place in Beijing on May 14 and 15th," White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
The visit was originally slated to begin March 31 as a three-day trip before hostilities with Tehran forced a postponement. Leavitt clarified Wednesday that a resolution to the ongoing war was never set as a prerequisite for rescheduling, noting that President Xi had recognized that Trump needed to remain stateside during active military operations and had accepted the delay without objection.
Trump himself confirmed the new dates on his social media platform Truth Social, framing the upcoming trip in sweeping terms and saying he looked "very much forward" to what he called "a monumental event." He added that representatives from both sides are "finalizing preparations for these historic visits."
Leavitt also revealed that Trump and first lady Melania Trump plan to welcome President Xi and his wife to Washington for a reciprocal visit later this year, signaling that the diplomatic engagement between the world's two largest economies is set to extend well beyond the Beijing summit.
