US Denies Claims of Civilian Strikes in Iran’s Lamerd
In an official statement, spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins stated, “U.S. forces did not launch any strikes at any time into the city of Lamerd or anywhere within 30 miles (48 kilometers) during the opening day of Operation Epic Fury.” He emphasized that no military action occurred in or near the area during that period.
Hawkins additionally dismissed assertions regarding the deployment of a Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), explaining that the video footage circulating in media coverage does not align with the missile’s known characteristics.
He clarified, “A PrSM is 13 feet in length. The munition depicted in the video appears to be twice as long, consistent with the dimensions and silhouette of an Iranian Hoveyzeh cruise missile,” reinforcing the claim that the weapon shown differs significantly from the U.S. system.
The rebuttal came after a report published by The New York Times, which referenced visual materials and weapons specialists who concluded that a PrSM struck a sports hall and a nearby school on Feb. 28, resulting in at least 21 fatalities.
According to the report, assessments of footage and images from the location indicate that the weapon involved was likely a PrSM, a short-range ballistic missile engineered by the U.S. Army.
The publication further noted that a U.S. official acknowledged the use of the PrSM, while experts highlighted fragmentation patterns that they said were consistent with the missile system.
