US Reportedly Pauses Strait of Hormuz Mission After SA Withholds Support
The plan, described as “Project Freedom,” was said to involve US military escorts for Western-flagged vessels passing through the strategically important waterway, which carries a significant share of global oil shipments. However, Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, were reportedly not consulted in advance of the announcement.
Following the launch announcement, Saudi authorities allegedly informed Washington that US forces would not be permitted to use key facilities, including Prince Sultan Air Base near Riyadh, nor operate through Saudi airspace in support of the mission.
Attempts to resolve the disagreement through high-level communication reportedly did not produce a breakthrough, with officials indicating that a call between US leadership and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman failed to restore access needed for the operation to proceed.
As a result, the initiative was paused shortly after its announcement, with US officials citing shifting diplomatic developments in regional negotiations involving Iran as part of the broader context for the decision.
The operation had been presented as a measure aimed at protecting maritime traffic through the strait, a critical global energy route. However, subsequent adjustments in policy direction appeared to coincide with reports of progress in indirect diplomatic discussions involving Tehran.
The situation reportedly caused confusion within parts of the US administration, as different officials had publicly signaled ongoing momentum behind the initiative shortly before its suspension.
Iranian officials, responding to the developments, dismissed the operation in public remarks and criticized conflicting statements about negotiations, portraying the episode as evidence of inconsistent messaging from Washington.
