Navy Nuclear Deterrence Mission work kicks off at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor with temporary parking lot contract award
Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Northwest awarded a $9.5 million firm-fixed-price contract for critical waterfront support infrastructure at Naval Base Kitsap (NBK)-Bangor Sept. 22.
The contract, designated as Project 788 (P788), will construct crucial support facilities, including parking infrastructure and security-compliant pedestrian corridors, to support the workforce at the Trident Refit Facility (TRF) Bangor. TRF is the primary industrial component of the Navy's strategic submarine force on the West Coast, providing unmatched maintenance, modernization, and logistics support to the nation's nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) fleet.
"This project near the NBK-Bangor waterfront is a prime example of how shore readiness directly translates to strategic warfighting capabilities," said Capt. Bob Stiles, NAVFAC Northwest Commanding Officer. "Every square foot of support space we optimize near the waterfront ensures the TRF workforce can safely and efficiently execute their maintenance missions. Keeping our submarines on patrol is one of the nation’s highest defense priorities, and that mission starts with the robust shore infrastructure we build and maintain right here."
The scope of work involves the design and construction of two temporary parking areas within a 10-acre site to manage workforce displacement during upcoming major modernization projects. The project will also include substantial roadway improvements to Turtle Road, strategic pedestrian corridors to safely channel industrial workers to the waterfront, high-efficiency security lighting, and rigorous environmental protections to preserve the surrounding Pacific Northwest wetlands.
The NBK-Bangor waterfront serves as the homeport for West Coast transit-protected SSBNs. By optimizing logistics and personnel flow adjacent to the drydock and refit piers, this project directly minimizes transit delays for key industrial personnel, keeping operations agile and the Fleet equipped with the maintenance needed to fulfil their mission.
The contract was competitively procured via the Northwest Multiple Award Construction Contract (MACC) Small Business registry. Work will be performed in Silverdale, Washington, and is expected to complete in less than one year.
