Future Eagle Scout dedicates project to Navy Medicine community

Local Boy Scout Asher Selco will soon earn the esteemed title of Eagle Scout, the highest rank within the Boy Scout organization. To earn this, he had to complete a community service project. Selco tied the care he received in his life and decided to give it back to that organization. Selco, along with other scouts within Troop 474, spent a Sunday beautifying an atrium at Naval Hospital (NH) Jacksonville.

“I spent more than a year trying to come up with a project and how I can better the community. It was my dad who suggested doing a project at NH Jacksonville,” Asher said. Selco, a senior at Creekside High School in St. Johns County is the son of Cmdr. Mitchell Selco, who is a Family Medicine physician at Naval Hospital Jacksonville.

“My son has been a patient of Navy Medicine his whole life and giving back to that community only made sense,” Mitchell said.

For his project, Asher selected new seating for the atrium, located between the central tower and east annex closest to the quarterdeck. He additionally cleaned the area, added new plants and came up with a necessity that hadn’t even been addressed.

“I was surprised there wasn’t a trash can out there, because there are vending machines, so we placed a few out there,” Asher said.

For the hospital leadership, having a teen give back was refreshing for them to see.

“To give personal service to the community is the highest form of citizenship. The project from Asher Selco supports the overall health and wellness of both staff and patients and gives them a place to find solace,” said NH Jacksonville Director Capt. Cindi Palacios. “I love that Asher identified an opportunity to improve the environment around him and did it with a smile.”

One last minute addition to the project came in the way of a mural painted on the end of the row of vending machines. One of the tables hadn’t arrived on time and the mural needed some finishing, so instead of one day of work, the group planned on returning another weekend.

“It means a great deal for Asher and his fellow scouts to spend another day, on their weekend, to demonstrate the spirit of scouting and ensure the project is complete,” said NH Jacksonville Facility Director Cmdr. Larry Middleton.

Asher’s future plans include studying mechanical engineering or aerospace, with an ultimate goal to work on space craft propulsion system.

“I’d like to go into space, but my mom doesn’t love that idea,” Asher said laughingly.

According to Asher, for those interested in scouting it’s “so easy” to get involved and he recommends to go online and just find a local meeting.

“One of the best things I have learned through Scouting is our motto to be prepared and that is something that drives me in my life,” said Selco.
